Marie Claire Gellings

I play with images and materials. I use this to make drawings/collages; I've been making one every day for thirteen years. Images from magazines are my starting point, but what follows is unpredictable. I consciously play with clarity, expectations and our 'normal' view. Sometimes the images remain recognizable and a new version of our daily (everyday) image reality is created, sometimes they disappear completely and are only a reason.

‘A picture is a secret about a secret, the more it tells you the less you know’ – Diane Arbus

Work created using recycled material or with new material?
Until recently my work consisted of second-hand/reused material. When I graduated for the Master's in Artistic Research at the UVA, someone asked me whether I could also make the same work with brand new material. That got me thinking. What does it mean for my work to use old or new material? And how does the meaning change if I were to convert it into other material? That is what I continue to investigate: What are the consequences of my material choices?
