“Find – engine” with the artists Marie Claire Gellings, Float and Jeroen Arians

Opening: Sat. September 17, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Rotterdam is alive and produces waste and material that appears and disappears on the streets.

Marie Claire Gellings, Float and Jeroen Arians see this material as elements of images that do not yet exist. At that moment the artists start a process of collecting, making choices, transforming, composing and finally presenting, as between September 17 and October 22 in Nieuw Charlois.

So much for the similarity in the work of the three artists and the original reason why they were brought together in this exhibition. Their personal work distinguishes itself in three forms: Marie Claire Gelling makes image collages, Float kinetic, spatial objects and Jeroen Arians photographic still lifes. They are carefully composed images, the application of which leads to the discovery of completely new worlds.

Marie Claire Gellings uses found visual elements to create collages as spatial representations. Sometimes the images remain recognizable and new versions of our daily (everyday) image reality arise, sometimes they disappear completely and are only a reason.

The kinetic images of Float reveal very slowly and with a certain smile the world of the inventor of images that demand attention, because they show with a certain sense of romance the presence of stories in the materials.

Jeroen Arians' photos are still lifes in the extreme. The enchanting light changes the composition from waste to stars on a stage.

We would like to invite you to attend the opening of this exhibition on Saturday, September 17.

Ruud Goedhart: Shop around

Opening: Sat. June 4, 2022 at 5:00 PM with a short word from Jeroen Jongeleen and Dinant Christe

Stuff, everyday things that do not immediately scream for attention, but are seemingly carelessly present, these are the subjects of Ruud Goedhart. He paints them, as it were, and then lets them 'shine' or places them back in their original place. At the same time he tests painting on abstraction and figuration and on the boundaries of painting and object. Ruud prefers to work with tempera, decor and wall paint, charcoal and pencil on unprepared linen and he only uses color if it is functional and it fits within the concept. The works are created in series of the same subject after which he isolates, merges or combines them. incorporated into a 'painting installation', such as now in the exhibition in Nieuw Charlois: 'Shop Around'

Come by and be amazed by this explosion of paintings. Everything is for sale!

Maarten Bel: Embroidery in the evenings

Opening weekend: Sat. 9 and sun. April 10, 2022 (during South Explorer).

opening hours: April 9 to May 7 2022 from Wed. to Sat. from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Artist Maarten Bel alienates his audience by addressing heavy themes in a humorous way, for which he often draws inspiration from everyday events. In his world, the Smurfs are melting due to climate change, picking up trash is becoming a more fanatical game than Monopoly, and few things are as sexy as a man who embroiders.

In Nieuw Charlois the artist shows his ever-growing collection of embroideries under the title: EMBROIDERY IN THE EVENING HOURS

Here, image and text are connected by embroidery stitches in life wisdom that is as brilliant as it is trivial, which is therefore already iconic before the last stitch is made.

A must even for non-embroidery-loving audiences!

For those who can handle a sample of death metal, it is advisable to come and take a look during a workshop by Maarten on Saturday April 9 between 12 noon and 3 p.m. Ten participants will expand their minds with a needle and thread during a live performance by the band “Graf”.

Residency for the People

Opening:
Friday, March 25, 2022 from 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Then open from March 26 to April 3 on Wed to Sat from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Residency for the People (Lucas Maassen and Jip Geven) is a place where non-professional artists can do something they really want. In Rotterdam, Dorian Kingma and Myrthe Krepel from SMELT organized the “Very Open Call” for everyone and Viktoriya Gotseva the “Mama's Call” for single mothers.

In the exhibition in Nieuw Charlois you will find the work of Rotterdam residents Runa, Elis and Teo. In addition, the work of the Koffiekopsalon, a collaboration between Residency for the People and Atelier NL (Lonny van Ryswyck and Nadine Sterk) is exhibited.

Residency for the People (RftP) investigates what happens when you open up a free space to people who do not have a creative profession. The residency offers everyone the opportunity, time and support to realize a dream or undertake something new. This does not have to be art or design-related, but the starting point is that the residents actively realize their own plan. RftP does not grant wishes, but encourages people to do something they really want. Dorian Kingma and Myrthe Krepel together form social design studio SMELT. They create experiences and interactive installations that encourage people to engage in (self-)examination, meaning-making and reflection on social challenges. The collaboration between Residency for the People and SMELT was supported by the Creative Industries Fund NL. Atelier NL is always looking to connect people with each other and their environment. For the KoffieKopSalon pilot project, Lonny and Nadine invited all neighbors to the Bergmann Church to make their own coffee cups from local clay.

Nieuw Charlois is a platform for experiment and is therefore proud to present “The Very Open Call”. We hope to welcome you with us.

Kira Fröse Mopping with the tap open

Opening:
Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 February 2022 from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.

The limits of our perception are washed-out concepts – we feel with eyes and see with hands. Kira Fröse's work invites you to distrust your senses and reinterpret the accustomed.

For the exhibition 'mopping with the tap open', Kira Fröse transforms Nieuw Charlois into a space with an atmosphere that you actually only know from your own bathroom or the launderette. Where we are normally alone with our bodies to observe our irregularities, the objects around us are now suddenly in the spotlight. They gain the will to express themselves, to shift, to freeze, to flow and to get out of hand.

What turns out is that when you look in the mirror, not everything seems to be as it seems at first glance.
